A 49-year-old man and his family are afraid that their three-bedroom home in Mnandi informal settlement near Extension 3 may collapse to the ground if they don't get help soon.

Vuyani Bashe is self-employed and lives with his girlfriend and their eight-year-old child. Bashe makes a living by doing odd jobs for local community members.

He does plumbing, tiles and renovations. Bashe's girlfriend works as a cleaner. He told Grocott's Mail that earlier in the week his girlfriend phoned him in the evening telling him that she thought there were people on the roof.

When he arrived and checked it turned out that one of the supporting planks had fallen off causing the noise and damage to the kitchen walls.

Yesterday Bashe phoned Grocott's Mail after the top part of the wall in his bedroom started falling off in his bedroom at about 10am.

"I'm starting to panic because I have noticed that the wall in the kitchen is starting to sink under the foundation," he said. Bashe says he tried to contact Ward Councillor Nomathamsanqa Meti, but she was out of town.

"I then went to see the ward committee member Bulelwa Magogoshe and she phoned the councillor," he said. Magogoshe told Bashe that Meti said she would call the people from the Municipal Disaster Management Unit to try to assist him.

Speaking to Grocott's Mail yesterday Makana Municipality's Disaster Management Unit manager Khuselo Qupe said they had not received any reports of damage to homes.

Qupe said he had gone out to some areas to check if there were any incidents earlier in the day but found nothing. When he was alerted to Bashe's home, he asked for directions to the house and said he would go and check out the damage.

Qupe also urged residents to follow the proper processes of reporting to councillors when they need help from the unit.
