Makana Municipality's efforts to provide improved and uninterrupted water services to the people of Makana may cause water outages at different periods.

Municipal spokesperson Yoliswa Ramokolo said the project meant to the replacing asbestos pipes in Grahamstown is under way.

"The nature of the work is such that there might be interruptions in the supply due to the pipes that will be changed during the process," she said.

Ramokolo reassured residents that the contractor will try to take precautionary measures to keep interruptions to a minimum.

Makhanda JV, which has been appointed to carry out the project is currently working in York Street.

"I would therefore like to inform the residents residing in that area [about]the work that is being carried out by the company and the disruptions that might occur," she said.

Ramokolo said Fort England Hospital is also supplied by that main, which means they will also be affected. She said the municipality is trying its best to provide water efficiently.

"The municipality is striving to provide improved and uninterrupted services to the residents of Makana and this is a step towards achieving that goal," Ramokolo said.

Ramokolo said this is not the only area that the project will be focusing on. Several pipes in different streets will also be replaced. The project will focus on the following streets:

· Corner Beaufort & York – York Bend near Fort England

· Corner African & Milner – Corner Somerset & African

· Corner African and Milner to Corner Hospital Bend and Milner

· Jacobus Way to Jacobus Way · Corner Selworthy & Willenton – Taunton

· Corner Selworthy & Withypool – Corner Withypool & Pollock

· Corner Glastenbury & Taunton – Milner

· Corner Willenton & Illchester – Corner Lucas Avenue & Milner

Ramokolo said this list of streets is provisional as Makana's Water and Sanitation Department can change the streets as they deem fit.
