Last Saturday afternoon (5 September), under the clear Spring skies of Grahamstown, community-based organisation Dakkie Yam Studios held a beauty contest aimed at motivating learners – especially matrics – as they face their final term of the year.

The event took place at BB Zondani Recreation Hall in Fingo and involved pupils from various primary and secondary schools and communities around Grahamstown including Nombulelo and Mary Waters High Schools and Fikizolo Junior School.

Competitions and performances included modelling, dance, music and spoken word.

Winners received Checkers gift vouchers Dakkie Yam Studios is in its second year of existence and was created by 11 local musicians and performers who wanted to do something to help young people in the area.

It aims to create opportunities for local youth to get together in a safe environment and take part in activities that enrich their lives. It is funded by the founders.

They staged the event with the help of learner, Silindokuhle Sankobe, who was instrumental in gathering the contestants and also with support from local Facebook page, ‘Grahamstown Felebs’.

Dakkie Yam wishes all the students the best of luck in their exams.

Afterwards they are planning an event to celebrate all the learners' hard work and the festive season.
