Next Sunday, take the chance to enjoy some of our beautiful countryside at the same time as raising money for an excellent cause at the Oldenburgia Hiking Club charity hike.

It's designed to be easy walking for everyone and will start at the Highlands Tower and, after passing by a dam and through farmland and indigenous bush, end 8kms later with a picnic lunch by the dam on Mike Palmer's farm.

It's also a chance to get up close to our new wind turbines plus organisers are hoping that there will be plenty of birdlife out and about for the viewing.

The R30 entry fee will be donated to the Siyazama Pre-School in Ext 6 which is an NPO and green flag school. The dedicated staff there work for a very small stipend and resources are tight.

Their current dream is to take the children to Assegaai Hiking Trails this year to see animals in the wild.

Last year they took them to Kenton so they could see the sea. Not everyone who lives in Grahamstown has the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful natural surroundings and this hike could give some of our underpriviledged children the chance to do just that.

Here are the details When: Sunday 13 September. Where: Highland's Road Bring: Hat, sunscreen, snacks. Lunch will be transported to the end point in the vehicles.

Difficulty: Easy 8km. Good for families and all comers. Meet: Pick and Pay parking 08h00 to transfer vehicles to the end point. Queries: Helen Averbuch 082 841 0790. helen.dogflower@gmail.com Cost: Minimum donation of R30 – please pay on arrival.

Kids under 12 free. Alternately you may donate to the cause even if you are not hiking via the Oldenburgia Hiking Club account: ABSA, Branch 632005, Account 9245067707 using Siyazama as the reference.
