This week, organisers of the Joyce Poole Bridge event were delighted to hand over a cheque for just over R18 000 to Grahamstown Hospice. It's the highest total ever in the nine years the fund-raiser has been in existence.

It was started in 2007 in memory of Joyce Poole who lost her battle with cancer in 2006.

Two of those who organised the event, Maureen Van Hille and Mary Birt, had played bridge with Joyce for over 30 years and wanted to do something in her name.

This year, 68 players from Grahamstown, Port Alfred, Kenton and Bedford got together, paying R50 per player.

The rest of the money was raised by the kind donations and sponsorship of:

Allon and Carol Poole
Ann and Andre Marais
BUCO Caroline and Derek Jack
Christine Read
Members of Grahamstown Book Club
Donald Hendry
Earth's Produce
Frank and Jenny Kroon
Fusion Specialty Food
Gary's Refrigerating
