Three Rhodes students have been offered counselling after three men used pepper spray during a break-in at one of the university's residences in the early hours of Tuesday 18 August.

Three Rhodes students have been offered counselling after three men used pepper spray during a break-in at one of the university's residences in the early hours of Tuesday 18 August.

Media relations officer Catherine Deiner said three men gained entry to the residence through an unlocked common room door on the first floor of Ruth First residence.

The men used pepper spray on three students who interrupted their progress through the residence.

"The students are unharmed and have been offered counselling from the Counselling Centre," Deiner said.

Students reported three cellphones, a wallet and a bike missing, Deiner said.

"The Campus Protection Unit and the SAPS were called. SAPS have been to collect forensic evidence and an investigation is under way."

Grahamstown Crime Intelligence Officer Captain Milanda Coetzer confirmed the incident and said the bicycle was later recovered.

Coetzer said a female student was confronted by the men on her return from the bathroom. She said the men, one who was armed with a knife, threatened her and a struggle ensued.

Two fellow students heard their friend shouting and quickly came to assist her.

"No one was injured, but the men managed to get away with the cellphones," Coetzer said.

"It appears that they must have entered the residence after entering via the back of the premises.

"Grahamstown police are working closely with Rhodes Campus Protection unit."

Police asked anyone with information to contact Lieutenant Mzwandile Maleki at 082 3199 255.

Coetzer said there was currently no indication that this incident was related to any of the other robberies or burglaries elsewhere in town.

Police opened a case of house robbery.
