The Mega District Schools Rugby Competition this weekend will see girls and boys in action from around the Sarah Baartman District. The event is hosted by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in partnership with the Department of Education.

Nobuntu Gantana, assistant director of special programmes unit at the department, said the competition “forms part of the provincial Department of Sports and Department of Education top schools programme which is the cornerstone of the school sport programme in both departments”.

The competition will be held at the Graeme College sports fields, with matches scheduled to start at 9am.

The competition will see boys and girls in the U16 age group in action.

Boys sides taking part in the competition are: Humansdorp Secondary School (Uitenhage Education District), St Colmcille High School (Uitenhage Education District), Mary Waters High School and Alexandria Secondary (both Grahamstown Education District), Spandau Secondary School and Asherville Secondary School Graaff-Reinet Education District.

Girls sides include Humansdorp Secondary School (Uitenhage Education District), Alexandria Secondary School, Archie Mbolekwa Secondary School and Ntaba Maria Secondary School (all Grahamstown Education District), Carel du Toit Secondary School and Spandau Secondary School (both Graaff-Reinet Education District).

The teams will be competing for the crown of Sarah Baartman District Schools Rugby Sevens Champions.

The winning teams will go on to represent the District at the Provincial Rugby Competition in East London from 24 to 26 September.

From there, the winning schools will proceed to the national top schools championships in Pretoria from 11 to 15 December where the best schools from across the nine provinces will compete for the National Schools Rugby championship.

Gantana said rugby sevens is one of the 19 priority codes currently part of the top schools programme.

“The programme promotes participation at all levels of the school sport continuum from intra level competition through to national level.'

This weekend’s winners will be awarded trophies, medals and sports equipment from the department, as well as transport and accommodation to the winners representing the district at the Provincial Rugby Competition in September.
