The R72 near Kenton On Sea was closed for hours on Tuesday 11 August after residents protested aginst poor services from the police.

Police spokesperson Luvuyo Mjekula confirmed the protest and said protesters had burnt tyres and blocked the R72 coastal road.

He gave no further details. "What I know is that the police dispersed the people and things calmed down.

The R72 was closed for some hours," said Mjekula.

"They addressed the police and acting cluster commander Colonel Lizette Zeeli accepted the memorandum.

They asked the police to respond to their concern within seven days."

Resident Kholisile Ngqosha said serious cases have been reported to the police and alleged that nothing had been done.

"We have lost trust to the police services here because it does not matter how serious is the case you're reporting, but it will be ignored.

"Maybe about two months ago there was a person who died in the police holding cells and nothing happened. Another case was a small child who was raped by an adult and that person was not arrested," said Ngqosha.

He said people of that community and their councillor had reported the matter to the station commander and he had said he would follow up.

Ngqosha said drugs were being sold to community members.

He said the community was now fed up. Ngqosha said they were going to have a meeting to discuss the way forward.
