Jene Banfield and Terri-Lynn Penney of Grahamstown based Run/Walk For Life Athletics Club represented Eastern Province at the South African Half Marathon Championships.

Jene Banfield and Terri-Lynn Penney of Grahamstown based Run/Walk For Life Athletics Club represented Eastern Province at the South African Half Marathon Championships.

The Jumbo Nelson Mandela Bay City Half Marathon, incorporating ASA Championships, hosted the top athletes from around the country.

Lucky Mohale of Central Gauteng raced to victory in a great time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 6 seconds, with fellow provincial athlete Mbongeni Nxazozo second in 1:02:07.

Lusapho April of Border was third in 1:02:14. In the women’s race, winner was Lebo Phalula (Central Gauteng) who finished in 1:11:54.

She was followed home by her twin sister Lebogang in 1:12:18 and Cornelia Joubert (also Central Gauteng) was third in 1:12:37.

Penney was sixth women In the 35 to 39 age category, in a time of 1:32:09, while Banfield was fifth in the 40 to 44 age category in 1:29:23.

While the event was a provincial race, it was also an open event attracting many athletes from around the province as well.

A total of 473 finishers were recorded. See Grahamstown results in Know The Score on page 29.
