The funeral of the Grahamstown man crushed by his house in heavy winds last week has been delayed due to forensic investigations.

Sakhekile Nkompo, who was crushed when his Hlalani wattle and daga house collapsed in the early hours of Thursday 4 June, lived alone, a few metres from the family home.

When Grocott's Mail went to visit his family this week, what was left of the house remained on the ground..

His family had removed the corrugated iron roof sheeting to prevent its being stolen.

Most of the contents of Sakhekile's house were damaged beyond repair.

His brother, Enoch Nkompo, this week told Grocott's Mail that Sakhekile's funeral has been delayed due to routine forensic investigations. A post-mortem was being conducted.

"We cannot even claim insurance because the death certificate is not yet issued," Enoch said.

Earlier this week, the family said they had not yet heard from the mayor following his initial visit.

Makana Municipality's disaster manager Khuselo Qupe, who led the team conducting damage assessment across the municipality that day, said Sakhekile was the only casualty reported.

Speaking on Monday, he said he had been tasked by the mayor with establishing what the family needed and would be meeting Enoch during the week.
