At least 400 Grahamstown people are expected to take part in an effort to clean up the entire Ward 10 area in commemoration of World Environment Day on Friday, 5 June.

At least 400 Grahamstown people are expected to take part in an effort to clean up the entire Ward 10 area in commemoration of World Environment Day on Friday, 5 June.

Ward 10 incorporates the Xolani section of Tantyi, and parts of Fingo.

The clean-up plan was announced by Makana Municipality mayor Zamuxolo Peter during a special council meeting at the city hall on Friday 29 June.

Peter said it was no secret that Makana Municipality is dirty.

He said the Public Safety and Community Services portfolio had made calls for the municipality to declare a "state of dirtiness" in Makana.

He said this was a recommendation which would need discussion by Council.

Peter said the clean-up was timed to coincide with World Environment Day on 5 June.

According to a pamphlet distributed by administrator Pam Yako, the plan is to remove all rubbish, household refuse, broken glass, and other items littering open spaces, roads and the natural landscape.

Yako appealed to residents to come out and do as much as possible to clean the area on the day.

She appealed to community members to support the initiative.

Volunteers are encouraged to join the Makana Council, South African Police Service, the army, businesses, faith groups, NGOs and schools.

The challenge is to fill two bin liners with rubbish between 9am and 1pm on Friday.

The meeting point is the BB Zondani Hall at the corner of Albert Street and Victoria Road.

Those who are able to bring their own bags and gloves are encouraged to do so.

"We will start with a short programme in commemoration of the day," Yako said.
