The Sarah Baartman district office of the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) played its part in the fight against xenophobia.

The Sarah Baartman district office of the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) played its part in the fight against xenophobia.

In a statement, the department said it is dedicated to playing its role in uniting against xenophobia and towards a crime-free society.

Although attacks on other African immigrants have eased off, scores of groups and organisations continue to campaign for a xenophobia-free society.

Large numbers from Fingo village and surrounding parts of town flock to Fingo Square.

The department was partnered in the event by the South African Police Service, Makana Municipality and the Born Again Enrichment Centre.

They also hosted a street festival, as part of the collective action to create awareness against xenophobia, crime and drug abuse.

The Department said it has dedicated 16 May to promoting unity through sport and recreation, as well as encouraging communities to stand together and fight crime and substance abuse.

Community members, including youth and children, engaged in sport and recreational activities on the day as they highlighted the values of ubuntu and working towards community development.

The event started off with a fun walk from Egazini to Fingo square at 9am.

The street festival at Fingo Square started at 10am.
