A moment of silence was observed for the late ANC councillor Nomhle Ngoqo at a Mayoral Imbizo held in Extension 9 Hall on Wednesday night.

Ngoqo passed away on Tuesday night at a Port Elizabeth hospital after a long battle with illness.

ANC regional secretary Scara Njadayi described Ngoqo as a person who served the ANC and the public with distinction.

"We are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Comrade Ngoqo. We will organise a memorial service for her and we wish her to rest in peace," Njadayi said.

ANC chief whip Julia Wells told Grocott's Mail on Thursday that all the ANC branches in Makana would converge on the city today (Friday) for a major planning meeting.

"We will discuss a programme of action tomorrow. I know that the Speaker is very much involved in the arrangements of the service," Wells said.

Wells said it is the first time since the formation of Makana that a councillor has died during their service.

"We are all traumatised at the loss of our councillor," said Wells.

Council Speaker Rachael Madinda-Isaac left before the start of Wednesday night's Ward 5 mayoral Imbizo to join mourners at Ngoqo's Phumlani home.

Details about the funeral and memorial service are expected to emerge in today's ANC meeting.
