Three former Kuyasa Special School pupils, Eldrich George, Shawn April and Winston Johnson, have been selected to represent South Africa in a cricket triangular for the intellectually impaired.

The event takes place in Australia in March and teams will come from South Africa, Australia and England.

The Kuyasa three were part of the South African side which took part in the International Sports Federation for People with Intellectual Disability (INAS-FID) Tri-Nations cricket tournament in 2011.

Since then they have been part of the squad, but no fixtures have taken place. Until now, that is. The team will meet in Pretoria in February for a training camp.

From there the team will travel across to Australia to take part in the international event. Winston and Eldrich currently live in Port Elizabeth, where they play cricket for United Brothers cricket club.

The two often come to Grahamstown, where their family lives. Shawn April works in town and plays for a local cricket club. Eldrich says he feels “very good” about making the side, while Winston says he feels proud to have been selected.

All three are looking forward to the trip. Kuyasa Special School principal Diane Steyn said the school is very proud of the three former pupils, adding that all three have blossomed through their sport. “It’s fantastic for them,” said Steyn.

She said the current Kuyasa pupils look up to all three and want to be like them. "They are role models for the pupils,” Steyn said.
