Grahamstown pupils came back jubilant from the National School Sport Championships that took place in Pretoria recently. Ten pupils from Kuyasa Special School were part of the Eastern Cape team that came forth in the championships.
Grahamstown pupils came back jubilant from the National School Sport Championships that took place in Pretoria recently. Ten pupils from Kuyasa Special School were part of the Eastern Cape team that came forth in the championships.
The Kuyasa pupils took part in basketball, netball, soccer and cross country. Kuyasa netball coach Mutiwe Zondani said the championships were a good exposure to the pupils, and he hopes it plays a major role in boosting them further in their sporting activities.
Zondani said the Kuyasa pupils "performed exceptionally well" with Rowina Jasson finishing as the Eastern Cape teams top scorer in netball. Kuyasa sport coordinator Isabel Strauss said this year they had a fairly new team but added that she was "proud of their performance in the championships".
"I am happy with our position even though this team is inexperienced, we still have a lot of work to put in to make sure the pupils perform well.
“Sports like basketball need to be developed further especially in the province, this year we took sixth place after taking silver last year," Strauss said.
The learners will now take a well-deserved break from school activities and enjoy the festive season feeling proud of their overall standing in the championships having beaten five other provinces for their spot.
