Grahamstown's Eastern Cape welterweight boxing champion, Mziwoxolo Ndwayana, lost the fight against national title-holder Tsiko Mulovhedzi in the 6th round on Saturday 13 December.

The long-awaited tournament, hosted by Xaba Boxing Promotion, took place at the Orient Theatre Hall in East London.

According to Ndwayana, known as Black Tiger, he was not able to go the full 12 rounds because he could not see clearly.

“I was disturbed by Vaseline that I use for preventing cuts on my face and it made it hard for me to see my opponent clearly,” he said. He added that he will train more and not give up.

His father and coach, Bulelani Ndwayana, also said that they are down, but not out.

“This was our first time fighting for the title match and it won’t get us down,” he said.

It was the eighth time that Mulovhedzi has taken the welterweight title. The match had been scheduled twice before, once in Grahamstown, but was postponed for financial reasons.
