Grahamstown’s Pro Carmine choir ended a busy year of tours and concerts with their annual Christmas programme on Friday 12 December, in Christ Church Hall.

The choir, directed by Peter Breetzke, sang a range of Christmas music ranging from Gabrielli’s Angelus ad pastores ait to the contemporary and challenging Ring Christmas Bells.

Themed sections ('Gabriel’s Revelation', 'Joseph and the Shepherds', 'What kind of Messiah') were broken by Malcolm Hacksley's readings of quirky poems by Godfrey Rust.

‘Joseph and the Shepherds’, for example, begins:

    Midnight in Bethlehem, Zero AD.
One or two people in difficulty.
Out on the street with a donkey and wife
Joseph had reached a bad point in his life.

An appreciative audience donated a total of R1 500 after th concert, which will go to the Grocott’s Mail Christmas Cheer Fund.
