A group of caring Grahamstown fitness and outdoor enthusiasts raised R8 000 on Saturday morning 29 November for a very special cause.

Dozens lined lined up at the start for the Big Walk, Run, Cycle for Cancer and Little Laura. Laura Pruissen, who is just 4 years old, has been diagnosed with cancer and is in Cape Town with her family, undergoing Chemotherapy.

“Laura’s family was on a week’s holiday in Cape Town when they found out their daughter had cancer,” Lindsay Vroom, one of the organisers of the event, told Grocott’s Mail as particpants gathered for the start.

She said the fun run wasto pay towards Laura's medical costs and also to create awareness for cancer.

Laura is at the Red Cross children’s hospital. The event was divided into two categories a 5km; 10km walk, run or cycle. Jeff Grocott who took part on the fun run was enthusiastic.

“I am looking forward to it it’s a lovely day and people have come in their numbers to support the little girl which is great,” Grocott said. Proceeds will go to the Sunflower Fund which raises funds to help leukaemia patients.

Adults paid R40 entry and children R10 and there were more than two-hundred entries to the fun run.

“We are much chuffed with the outcome I know we’re going to raise a lot of money for Laura,” Vroom said. Pruissen is set to start school at Kingswood next year.

Her family is with her in Cape Town and she is in block 4 of her treatment. “We are very grateful to Victoria Girls' High School for providing the venue, and all of the other sponsors as well,” Vroom said this morning. In a social media post after the event co-organiser Kirsti Still wrote, "Thank you everyone for your support. We raised over R8 000 so far today."

Basie Boneparte led the field and Natalie Ross was the first woman home in the run.
