The rubbish piled up on Grahamstown's streets will be removed by Thursday 27 November, an official at Makana Municipality says.

The rubbish piled up on Grahamstown's streets will be removed by Thursday 27 November, an official at Makana Municipality says.

Piles of rubbish have been mounting on pavements across the city since Monday, when the first scheduled collection for the week failed to be done.

Most residents and businesses left their rubbish bags on the street overnight, in the hope they would be collected the next day.

Municipal spokesperson Yoliswa Ramokolo spokesperson said the reason staff weren't collecting refuse was that they have no safety boots.

She said the special boots, essential for the job, are expected to be delivered today. By tomorrow, members of the public should be assured that the refuse piled up in the streets will be collected, she said.

"The municipality apologises for not informing the public about the inconvenience," Ramokolo said.
