The upcoming South African Welterweight Title match is a dream come true for Grahamstown's own Mziwoxolo Ndwayana.

The upcoming South African Welterweight Title match is a dream come true for Grahamstown's own Mziwoxolo Ndwayana.

The Eastern Cape welterweight champ, known as “Black Tiger”, will be fighting for the belt against SA welterweight champion Tsiko Mulovhedzi, “Cruel Junior”, next Saturday 22 November in the new Indoor Sports Centre in Joza.

“Years of waiting and dreaming about having the national title fight in Grahamstown are about to happen," Ndwayana said, laughing.

"The journey has not been easy but what can I say? Here I am today preparing for a South African Welterweight Title match.

“This fight will always be in my memory even if I’m done with it because it’s something that I always wanted,” he said. Ndwayana was born in Grahamstown to Bulelani Ndwayana and Nomsa Nqupe.

“My life has been here in Grahamstown ever since I was born. I have travelled to other places and still came back to the land of my birth.”

He attended C M Vellem and N V Cewu primary schools before matriculating from Ntsika Secondary School. He is currently studying at Eastcape Midlands College. He started training in 2000 at the make-shift boxing area at the old indoor sports centre.

“I don’t know what sent me there but I found myself going there without being recruited or inspired by anyone,” he said.

“I know my father was a boxer but that was not a reason for me to go to the boxing.” In 2006, Ndwayana joined the South African Amateur Boxing Organisation, where he won 10 medals.

He signed as a professional boxer in 2010. At present, Ndwayana’s professional boxing record stand at: 15 fights, 12 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws.

Ndwayana said his dream is to be world champion. “I know it’s not easy, but we all have goals for ourselves and this one is mine.”
