A never say die attitude from 11 Attackers empowered them to secure their maiden victory in their SAB league début last Saturday.
Attackers secured a hard fought 2-1 victory against a visiting Friendly City from Alicedale. At first it didn't look like Attackers would register any points against spirited visitors who kept the games at a good tempo in 32 degree heat.
Attackers looked like newcomers in the division as they struggled to put together their passes. The pace of the game and the team's inexperience in the division seemed to keep them from finding a way through the City defence.
Whenever they found the space the forwards were either too casual with their shooting or kept the ball too long in their feet. Perhaps the half-time pep talk worked magic, though, as the Attackers came out in the second half with guns blazing.
They were rewarded as Siziwe Mandevu was at the right end of a swift cross from their left side and calmly headed past the city keeper, who had had a fairly relaxed outing up until that point.
A lack of concentration at the back allowed substitute Rhiters Martin to level matters for the visitors. Attackers' keeper Mfundo Maku couldn’t keep his team in the game any longer.
It had to take a stoppage time strike by substitute Sindiso Booi to ensure they collect maximum points at home. A win will go a long way to boost the morale of the league's débutantes.
In another SAB league encounter at Fiddlers Green, local side Maru FC delivered a perfect evening for Grahamstown soccer fans as they made light work of Golden Brothers with a comfortable 2-0 win.
Maru were expected to have no trouble at home having been long-time campaigners in the division.
The club knows exactly what it takes to compete in the division and the importance of collecting as much points as possible early at home.
