Kingswood College honoured the servicemen who gave their lives for the sake of peace and freedom at a special ceremony in the Chapel Tuesday 11 November.

The day, marking the end of World War 1, had special significance this year as it marked the centenary of the beginning of the war.

Kingswood pupils and teachers gathered to celebrate the bravery of the late soldiers and to admire their vision of hope for a better world one day.

The service was dotted with hymns and music by the school band led by Jacob de Haan. Banji Chona, a Grade 12 learner, remembered all who have been victims of war.

"Today we remember those persecuted and killed, we mourn victims of present day wars, we mourn with mothers, and we remain certain that our lives shall now be governed by hope for reconciliation and peace," Chona said.

"We shall not see bloodshed any longer."

Marni Van der Westhuizen said, “At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns fell silent on the Western Front, to bring to an end the First World War. Our nation and commonwealth has recalled that moment through our Armistice and Remembrance events down the decades, decades during which the men and women of our armed services have continued to pay the ultimate sacrifice.

"We stand here today to remember lives sacrificed in the service of our country, and those traumatised and injured in conflict. May we have such a devotion to justice and freedom that the heroism of all who fought, and still fight, may continue to be remembered in a nation of service and in a world of peace.”

Trudi Adendorf read an appropriate Bible passage, Micah 4: The law will go out from Zion, Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, For the Lord Almighty has spoken.
