A man arrested in connection with an attack on a group of international students from Rhodes University is in hospital under police guard and a task team has been set up to investigate the incident in which a student was raped.

The man was shot in the leg as he tried to resist arrest, said Colonel Sibongile Soci, deputy director of South African Police Services, Bisho.

He was traced to a nearby tavern following the attack on six Rhodes students at a backpackers establishment in Port St Johns on the Wild Coast on the night of Friday 24 October.

Soci said one of them was raped.

The attackers robbed the students of their laptops and cellphones. Four men managed to flee the scene.

Police apprehended a second suspect, a 25-year-old man, about a kilometre from the crime scene at 2am Sunday, Soci said.

A vehicle, firearm and two cellphones were recovered.

A SAPS media statement said the Cluster Commander established a six-member Task Team to follow up leads and question the suspect, who is in hospital under police guard.

An Identikit of one of the suspects is being compiled, the statement said.

    The investigation continues.
