A record entry of over 180 karateka took part in the weekend’s East Cape Shotokan-Ryu Karate and Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Championships.
A record entry of over 180 karateka took part in the weekend’s East Cape Shotokan-Ryu Karate and Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Championships.
The champs took place in the Thomas Pringle Hall at the Monument on Saturday 18 October.
Local clubs in attendance included Makana, Joza, ECSR and Rhodes Shotokan Karate as well as participants from Somerset East, Cradock, Port Alfred, Fort Beaufort, Queenstown, East London and Port Elizabeth.
Brother and sister duo, David and Jessica Hayes, of Tom’s Dojo (Queenstown) won gold in the men’s and women’s brown and black belt kata categories, while Phillip van Eyk and Kayleigh Chamberlain of Western Suburbs Karate Club (Port Elizabeth) won gold in the men’s and women’s black belt kumite categories.
Winning double gold (in kata – forms and kumite – fighting) were: Saxola Fondini, Uvile Kondile, Sinokuhle Tambo, Olwethu Mantla, Sisipho Jali and Xolani Madlabati (all members of the Joza Karate Club).
