The Democratic Alliance Women's Network (Dawn) and Grahamstown residents gethered outside the high court this morning, 20 October, in support of a 16-year-old girl whose alleged rapist's trial was about to begin.
The 16-year-old survivor was allegedly raped by two men in their mid-20s last year on Christmas day in Port Alfred. Genevieve Cannon , Dawn representative, expressed her thoughts on the trial.
"As Dawn we want to show that we have no mercy towards abuse.
"We believe that the offenders should not be granted bail and serve the proper time." Cannon said. Cannon continued, saying that the government should put proper laws in place so that justice can be served.
"Abuse should not be tolerated in our societies.
"Men and women get raped all the time and we must stand as communities against this crime," Cannon said.
DA PR councillor at Port Alfred, Khanyisa Daweti, said the DA expected justice for women in South Africa.
Sentencing is expected to be delivered on Friday, Cannon said.
