Two Grahamstown shops face repair bills adding up to almost R8 000 after vandals smashed holes in their window panes in the early hours of Monday 22 September.

Hi-Q and PG Glass in Bathurst Street found rocks inside their premises. To add insult to injury, Hi-Q owner Robert van der Merwe believes they were taken from an area of the road outside the shop that had been poorly repaired recently.

Michelle Botha from PG Glass said staff were alerted by the company's security company around 2.30am after their alarm went off.

“The damage is about R3 700 worth of broken windows but luckily nothing was stolen,” she said. Van de Merwe told Grocott's Mail that Hi-Q staff arriving for work in the morning were stunned to see that one of their large windows had been smashed.

“Upon our arrival we found stones inside the building and when we inspected we saw that one of the big windows had been broken,” Van der Merwe said.

Van de Merwe was fuming at the fact that he would have an insurance excess of R3 000 to pay. He said they had reported the incident to the police, and that they were lucky nothing had been stolen.

“Whoever threw those stones took them from the poor repair-job to the road in front of the store carried out by the municipality a few weeks ago,” Van der Merwe said.

“Hopefully this will pressurise the municipality to act and the hole in the street will be repaired soon,” he said.
