Grahamstown resident Allister Williams will be competing in the provincial round of a national boerewors-making competition this weekend.

With his eye firmly on the prize, a Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider, Williams is using his 10 years of experience as manager of Grahamstown's Shoprite meat market to come up with a traditional boerewors recipe that will tickle the taste buds of the judges from the South African Chefs Association.

He'll be cooking off against his provincial rivals at the Moffett-On-Main Lifestyle Centre in Charlo, Port Elizabeth, Saturday 13 September.

The annual Boerewors Championship, hosted by Checkers, challenges participants nationwide to come up with a traditional boerewors recipe. Williams, from Extension 9, has entered the competition ever since he became manager 10 years ago.

"Most of the times I got certain prizes, but I didn’t reach the big prize. I’m still trying,” Williams said. Williams' motivation is two-pronged: the bakkie and the dream of seeing his boerewors in the fridges of Shoprite stores.

“I will feel very happy when I’m the winner and my sausages are on the shelves,” he said. So far, Williams does not consider anyone as competition.

“I want to be number one. I don’t see other people do a better sausage than me. In the competition there must be a winner and a loser. I believe in my sausages and what I make,” he said.

The competition’s first prize includes a Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider, a R2 500 holiday voucher from All Gold, a R2 000 Coca Cola cash prize and R750 Simba vouchers. Williams said he’s more interested in winning the Toyota Hilux.

“Getting that bakkie is my main point.” Outside his love for meat, Williams likes sport and goes to church when he’s off work. His family is very supportive of him in the competition.

“All this time when I’m going out for the boerewors competition they are always there to stand with me to support me,” said Williams.
