Grahamstown B&B A White House Guest House has been awarded the Makana Lilizela tourism award for providing excellent accommodation and service in the Eastern Cape.

The Lilizela Tourism Awards are an initiative of the National Department of Tourism (NDT). They are managed and delivered by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA), the only official and formal quality assurance body and a business unit of South African Tourism.

The awards recognise and reward entrepreneurs and establishments that epitomise excellence. According to Lebo Zulu, a consultant at Lilizela, they recognise and reward tourism players and businesses who work passionately to deliver world class service and whose delivery grows South Africa’s global destination competitiveness.

A White House, (formerly The White House) owner Yolandi Zacharellis and manager Rala Scotney say they are very proud of their achievement and that they are hoping for more awards to come. "We have a very bubbly group of ladies who are always keen to learn and we send them to training as well." Zacharellis said.

Offering customised breakfasts, wifi and 16-channel cable TV, the establishment, which overlooks a large park, provides a relaxed cosy atmosphere.

"We recently had Highway Africa delegates staying at the house and we usually have guests who are attending other prominent events in the town as well." Zacharellis said.

The guest house also offers honeymoon suites. Zacharellis says that they have received great feedback from guests.

"We really would like to see more local people visiting us,as we offer birthday parties and weddings." Zacharellis continued. The B&B accommodates 23 people.

Grahamstown's Hill Street Manor, winner of the Award in the B&B category last year, were among this year's finalists.

Lilizela is an Nguni word which means to ululate: a uniquely African act of congratulations when someone has done something well.
