More than 1 000 people have signed a petition to save the Grahamstown Station.
The petition, started by a group of Grahamstown residents, has attracted attention around the country and the world.
Campaign organisers said some of the online signatures came from countries such as the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia, Botswana, Thailand and Japan.
Philip Machanick, one of the petition organisers, said in an email to Grocott's Mail that "the signature count now stands at 1 333 with forms still in circulation".
This petition cites the grievances of the loss of heritage due to neglect on the part of Transnet and ongoing vandalism, the loss of an opportunity to reinstate rail transport to and from Grahamstown and increasing security problems.
Machanick told Grocott's Mail that as a member of the Grahamstown Residents’ Association Committee, "I am happy with the level of public support, which indicates that we should campaign further on this issue and not stop with the petition".
This petition will be issued to current-owner of the stationTransnet, Makana municipality and national and provincial governments.
