Parents and teachers at George Jacques Primary School in Alicedale have expressed relief to be finally getting assistance from the Department of Education after a Grade 1 teacher was appointed last Thursday 21 August.

“We are very happy as parents that our kids are back at school after almost a month of sitting at home and doing nothing,” Candice Louw-Arnold, a parent, told Grocott’s Mail.

The school had been without an Afrikaans Grade 1 teacher for almost a year and parents shut down the school last month as they felt that their grievances fell on deaf ears.

Ward 14 councillor Ernest Louw echoed Louw-Arnold’s sentiments saying they are very glad to have been part of the whole process that opened a lot of doors for many schools in and around Grahamstown.

Sizwe Betela, chairman of the Grahamstown district of education, introduced the teacher to parents, teachers and students. Principal Myrna Louw was said to have been instrumental in the appointment of the teacher.

Louw said the department acted swiftly after parents attracted media attention with their protests.
