    Morning army action wakes Grahamstown

    What happened in Grahamstown this time? Why so many cops in the early hours?

     

    The noise carried as far as Sunnyside, where resident Judith Reynolds woke up with a fright around 5.15am.

    “From the number of sirens and how long it continued for, I assumed it was a big fire or accident,” she told Grocott’s Mail this morning.

    The noise was in fact the sound of traffic department vehicles escorting military vehicles from the Army base on the Cradock Road into town.

    They drove to Fiddlers Green, from where they staged a rehearsal for tomorrow’s Freedom of the City parade by members of the 6Sai Battalion.

    The parade is to welcome them back from their duties in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    It begins at 8am tomorrow, 28 August, in Church Square.
