Grahamstown police are investigating a case of house robbery after a hammer-wielding man attacked a 23-year-old man in his Spring Street home on Tuesday 19 August.
The attacker made off with a number of valuable items.
The man was asleep in his flat around 6.15am, when he was woken up by several loud bangs followed by someone vigorously shaking him, police said. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said when the victim looked up, he was confronted by a stranger.
"The suspect was clad in a poncho that covered his body, a black beanie on his head and a scarf covered his face," Govender said. Govender said the attacker had a hammer in his hand and demanded the man's cellphone and laptop.
He then allegedly locked the victim in the room and fled with a black Fujitsu laptop, two speakers, a computer bag, an iPhone and a brown wallet containing the victim's driver's licence and bank cards.
Govender said the victim activated a panic button, and the security company quickly responded.
"The victim was unharmed," she said. Police found the front door wide open and a broken glass door.
Police have appealed to anyone who can help with the investigation to call the Grahamstown SAPS on 046 603 9147/8.
