The DA has retained Ndlambe [Port Alfred] Municipality's Ward 10 in the by-elections held on Wednesday 13 August.

The DA has retained Ndlambe [Port Alfred] Municipality's Ward 10 in the by-elections held on Wednesday 13 August.

Results of the municipal by-elections held countrywide were announced yesterday in a media release from the Electoral Commission.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) won 17 of the 25 wards contested in Wednesday’s by-elections with the remaining wards (8) going to the African National Congress (ANC), the Electoral Commission (IEC) said.

The results saw changes of party representation in four (4) wards: From the DA to the ANC in Ward 40 Nelson Mandela Bay (PE) in the Eastern Cape; From the Inkatha Freedom Party to the ANC in Ward 4 Waaihoek, KwaZulu-Natal; From the ANC to the DA in Ward 20 Polokwane, Limpopo; and from an independent candidate to the ANC on Ward 25 Rustenburg, North West.

In all other wards the party retained its representation. Three wards were uncontested. Voter turnout varied between 57.11% and 12.28% with an average of 31.75%.

The new councillors in the four (4) by-elections in the Eastern Cape are as follows:

  • Raymond Lionel Schenk of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 10 in the Ndlambe [Port Alfred] Municipality – EC105. The party retained the seat.
  • Masixole Hobo of the African National Congress in Ward 11 in the Port St Johns [Port St Johns] Municipality – EC154. The party retained the seat.
  • Andy George Jordan of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 10 in the Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA. The party retained the seat.
  • Thozamile Qushani of the African National Congress in Ward 40 in the Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA.
The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.
