In response to the letter by ‘Concerned animal lover’, Grocott’s Mail dated 1 August 2014, the SPCA has submitted an application to register our manager, Joirinda Gardner, as an AWA (Animal Welfare Assistant) but the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) insists that we advertise the post as part of the application process.

Our manager has done all the necessary paperwork, received letters of motivation from our local vet, Philip Gilfillan as well as the State Vet. I have also sent a lengthy motivation letter to the SAVC outlining the practicalities of having Gardner registered as an AWA.

She has also successfully completed all the necessary practical assessments with Gilfillan.

There is a rather lengthy process to becoming an AWA so the SPCA needs to follow procedures to ensure that the application is done correctly. Due to the fact that we only have one working vehicle, it has been extremely difficult for both Gardner and Gilfillan to be out at the same time.

We have had a very generous donation (the donor wishes to remain anonymous) which has enabled us to purchase a new vehicle. It is currently having the signage done, and will be out and about responding to the various call-outs requested once that is done.

The majority of our work is done in the township but we cover the entire Makana District, Alicedale, Riebeeck East and the various farming communities and game reserves.

The AWA registration will enableGardner to treat sick and injured animals under the authorization in Terms of Section 23(1) (C) of the Veterinary and Para-Veterinary Professions Act, 19 of 1982 as an AWA.

Should you have any further queries with regards to this please do not hesitate to contact the SPCA office on 046 6223233 who will put you in contact with myself.
