A construction of a R20 million shopping complex is currently under way at the lower Beaufort Street on the banks of the Cowie River. The project is one in a series of four, planned, multi-million property developments by local businessman, Piryawaden Ranchhod. Ranchhod said the R75 developments will happen over a period of five years and will give Beaufort Street a permanent facelift.

In an interview with Grocott's Mail  at the busy construction site this week Ranchhod said, "My aim is to rejuvenate all the old dilapidated buildings in our town, while creating jobs for the people of Grahamstown as we know there's a 40% unemployment rate in the town."

The development covers an area of 5 000 square metres, starting from Beaufort Street and Market Street. Ranchhod said the complex will be used by Cash Build hardware shop and will also feature 40 flats at the back. “The flats will be very affordable starting from R395 000 for a bachelor flat up to R595 000."

Ranchhod said some of the work on the development will contribute to the environment.  The decontamination and clean-up of the Cowie River has begun, he said."The building will be environmentally friendly as well," said Ranchhod.

He said he was saddened by the fact that Makana Municipality had not taken action for not taking against property owners who let their buildings deteriorate. "There is legislation that grants the municipality powers to fine people who let buildings deteriorate," he said.

He said he has managed to hire Grahamstown-owned construction companies to contribute to the local economy. “Also in the contract I've put a compulsory clause for a representation of woman and youth to be employed," he said.

Ranchhod has developed properties in the higher and lower ends of High Street, with the latest being the SASSA and Labour Department offices.

Ranchhod is also a councillor at Makana Municipality.
