Graeme College pupil, Siyamthanda Siaw, scored two tries for the Eastern Province Country District (EPCD) U18 side during their opening Coca-Cola Academy Week match against Leopards on Monday. EPCD won 37-0.

Graeme College pupil, Siyamthanda Siaw, scored two tries for the Eastern Province Country District (EPCD) U18 side during their opening Coca-Cola Academy Week match against Leopards on Monday. EPCD won 37-0.

In their second match on Tuesday, EPCD beat Red Valke 19-7.

Siaw is one of two Grahamstown pupils who are part of the EPCD side, together with Fanie van der Westhuizen of Kingswood College. Vander Westhuizen is the team Captain, while Siaw is the Vice-Captain.

The Academy Week started on Monday (7 July) and came to an end yesterday, with all matches taking place at the Technical High School Drostdy, in Worcester.

Siaw scored his first try halfway through the second half and his second two minutes before the final whistle.

In a statement after the EPCD vs Leopards game, Media Manager at South African Rugby Union, Rayaan Adriaanse said, “It was a very mature performance by the EP team. They played structured [rugby]and with discipline, but never failed to get the ball to their speedy outside backs.”

In the EPCD vs Red Valke match, both teams tried to play the passing game, but pressurised defence saw many balls dropped or passes going astray. This resulted in a try-less first stanza. In the second half more phases were played, which opened up more gaps to exploit. The speedier EP outside backs used this to their advantage and scored a couple of telling tries.

In Pretoria, Sibabalwe Mzanywa of Kingswood College scored a hat trick as Eastern Province beat the Pumas 28-26 during the U16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo youth rugby week.

EP lost their opening game 12-48 to Free State on the first day of the U16 rugby week on Monday, before beating Pumas on Tuesday.

The Grant Khomo week was hosted at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria from Monday (7 July) and ended yesterday (Thursday).

The clash between the Pumas was a tense affair as both teams tried hard to get on the front foot. EP scored two converted tries within the first five minutes as they took a 14-5 lead at the break. The Pumas hit back in the second half, scoring three tries, while EP added two to their total. EP won 28-26.

In their opening game against Free State, the first half was closely contested as the teams scored a try a piece. It was an extra conversion and penalty by Free State which gave them a 10-5 lead at the break. Free State found their form in the second half to score at will. Sazi Sandi, from Kingswood, score one of the two EP tries.

Part of the EP side from Grahamstown are Thembinkosi Mangwana, Ewan Pieters, Olehile Losaba, Sibabalwe Mzanywa, Athi Halom (all Kingswood) and Sazi Sandi (St Andrew’s).
