High art, downright down and dirty art, sophisticated debate and stand-up fights, comedy and tragedy, poetry and protest, the serene and the surreal – it's all about to unfold at the National Arts Festival which starts on Thursday 3 July.

High art, downright down and dirty art, sophisticated debate and stand-up fights, comedy and tragedy, poetry and protest, the serene and the surreal – it's all about to unfold at the National Arts Festival which starts on Thursday 3 July.

The official opening is at 6pm on Wednesday and the first event on the programme is the drama, Undermined, in the Princess Alice Hall at 10am on Thursday morning. At 1pm is the free Public Art performance Overture, by lively Danish musical theatre group, BATIDA, in the Oatlands school grounds.

At midday a theatre piece about veteran Grahamstown activist Ben Mafani, The Ghost of Glenmore, will be staged at the Masonic Front. It's written by stage manager at the Port Elizabeth Opera House Khaya Voko, who was moved by Mafani's years-long struggle for justice and personal peace.

Download the program at the official National Arts Festival website.
