Municipal wokers disrupted the ordinary council meeting at Makana's council chambers on Tuesday 24 June. The mayor, Zamuxolo Peter, acting municipal manager, Themba Mnguni and speaker, Rachel Madinda-Isaac, were trapped inside the city hall as workers did not allow them to leave.

The workers barged into the chambers during the meeting, chanting songs and disrupting the meeting, forcing councillors and officials to leave the chambers.

The workers trashed the city hall, ripping off council agendas and throwing rubbish all over the place.

Acting municipal manager Mnguni was addressing the council on a request by trade unions, the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) had applied for a march, prior to the disruption.

Mnguni said the item would be discussed by council as they had seven days to respond to the requests.

It is believed that the workers are complaining about the deductions from their salaries.

This is part of the no work no pay rule that was applied by the employer, due to the municipal worker strike two months ago.

Read more about the strike in the print edition of Grocott's Mail on Friday 27 June.
