President Jacob Zuma stressed the importance of keeping South Africa clean during his State of the Nation Address earlier this month. He asked and Ian Knott-Craig and Madeleine Schoeman answered.

Zuma announced that the theme of the 2014 International Mandela Day was to be a "major clean-up of our cities, towns, townships, villages, schools and beautify every part of our country”.

Knott-Craig and Schoeman couldn't wait until International Mandela Day on 18 July to contribute to the clean up.

Schoeman, the Principal of Ntsika High School and Kingswood teacher Knott-Craig teamed and started the Leaders of Tomorrow initiative. Made up of Ntsika pupils, the initiative's motto is 'Serving to lead'.

“The clean-up campaign is one way of serving the greater community,” Knott- Craig said.

Early last Tuesday 17 July, Ntsika pupils cleaned the Dr Jacob Zuma Drive stretch of the plastics that have become the famous 'alien invasive plants' of South Africa.

Armed with hand gloves and black garbage bags, the pupils were encouraged by passing drivers, hooting in appreciation.
