A distraught mother told Grocott's Mail that her son was struck by a motorbike in Durban street when the rider failed to stop on Sunday morning 22 June.
Jabu Nene said her son, Kwanele, was walking home for Sunday school with five friends in Durban Street, near the College of Transfiguration Church, when he was knocked over.
One of the friends present at the time of the incident said that the motor bike had come from behind and drove into his friend, who spun around before dropping to the ground.
The boys said the motor bike rider made no attempt to stop and simply glanced back at the boys, before riding away.
Kwanele said he felt very dizzy after the hit and was helped up by his friends, who then accompanied him home.
He said he did not feel any pain immediately and only had a numb feeling on the left side of his face.
The 10-year-old’s mother said that her son was, however, crying when he got home and she noticed that there was bleeding and visible swelling at the back of his left ear.
A day after the incident bruising and swelling was still evident and the boy said he experienced pain when swallowing.
Jabu had to call and ask a friend to drive her injured son to the hospital, as her husband was away at the time of the incident.
The boys were unable to note the bike’s registration number, but recalled that it was white in colour and the rider was male.
Jabu said she had taught her son the rules of the road from a young age and it has never been a problem for him to walk alone.
She said she was “shocked and enraged” when the boys told her that the rider made no attempt to stop and assess her son’s condition.
She said she had reported the story to Grocott’s Mail to warn other parents about the motorbike rider as he posed a potential danger to pedestrians.
“Someone else might not be as lucky as my son, who sustained only minor injuries,” she said.
Jabu said she had not yet taken any further action regarding the incident as she was awaiting her husband’s return.
