Amatola Water has been contracted by Makana Municipality since November 2013 to manage its bulk water supplies for the next five years.
Nair, who is Area Operations Manager, appealed to residents to urgently report any leaks, bursts and loss of water pressure.
Abnormally high demand since 5 June has seriously affected Waainek Water Treatment Works, Nair said.
There is a risk that higher-lying areas will have water interruptions by this morning (13 June), unless the cause is found soon and attended to urgently.
Despite repairing several leaks in the past week, the situation has not improved.
"We have been going around town at all hours, trying to identify possible pipe failures," he said.
A few major leaks in Somerset and Cromwell Streets have been isolated.
Nair called on residents on Rhodes campus and workers at institutions such as the hospitals, the prison, the army base and schools to check for water leaks and report them.
"We cannot see leaks inside these institutions and rely on your vigilance," he said.
Leaks, or loss of water pressure, should be reported to the Fire Department on 043 603 6000.
