Construction on housing in Mayfield (Extension 10) is well under way, with 455 residents already in occupation. But some new home owners are reluctant to move in because there is no electricity in the development.
Municipal spokesperson, Yoliswa Ramokolo, said 902 houses have been built so far by Makana Municipality, in conjunction with the national department of Human Settlements. They include 20 duplexes.
Construction has been delayed because of difficulty in sourcing flooring material.
Ramokolo said this, and the matter of electricity, “is still in the process (of being resolved)”. The electricity for Extension 10 in Mayfield is provided by Eskom and not Makana Municipality, Ramokolo said.
Eskom Communications Officer, Zama Mpondwana, told Grocott's Mail in a media statement this week, that “Eskom carries the operating costs for the electrification programme, as the licensed distributor supplying electricity to its customers.”
Eskom will be electrifying 800 connections in the Mayfield housing project.
It still unclear how the remaining 102 units will receive power.
