The ANC’s provincial executive council announced on Thursday 15 May that Pumulo Musaulle is their sole candidate for the premiership of the Eastern Cape.

The ANC’s provincial executive council announced on Thursday 15 May that Pumulo Musaulle is their sole candidate for the premiership of the Eastern Cape.

In a statement the organisation’s provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said, “We have reiterated the call of the last two ANC provincial conferences that the premier in the province must be the chairperson of the ANC in the province."

He said that on Wednesday a Special Provincial Executive Committee meeting had been convened to discuss this matter alone.
"It was attended by a majority of PEC members who unanimously agreed on that name," Mabuyane said.

"We also wish to put it on record that in the history of EC politics, it has never happened that the ANC takes an hour discussing the matter. In previous leaderships before Comrade Musaulle took over in 2009, because of deep divisions and other political interests to be considered, it used to take more than a day to come and agree with three names to be submitted to Luthuli House.

"This alone confirms the quality leader in Cde Pumulo Musaulle. He has led a united collective force since 2009 in his first term and ANC branches in PE last year have agreed that he must be given the second term. In that Comrade Pumulo has all the credentials to lead government of the Eastern Cape. We need [someone of his]calibre to lead the government."

Mabuyane said provincial officials would meet the party's national officials on Sunday to present the names to them.
