The Albany Angling Association, in conjunction with BUCO, organised its first Bass Classic. Philip Weyl, vice-chairman of the Albany Angling Association, said the target competitors were the "younger generation".

The competition was held at Settlers Dam, Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, on Sunday 11 May with a total of 24 junior anglers taking part. A total of 16 anglers were U12 and eight were U16.

Weyl said the event was "a great success". Sunday’s fishing was, however, held in extremely tough conditions "as a cold front rolled in and gave the bass a serious case of lock jaw,” said Weyl.

Despite the cold weather, a total of 28 bass made an appearance at the weigh station, with the largest fish weighing 0.57kg, caught by Daegen Lisher, aged five.

Tanasha Cooper won the U16 category with a bag of 0.82kg (2 fish), while Lisher, won the U12 category with a bag of 0.96kg (2 fish).

Weyl thanked the sponsors BUCO, Fusion, Pick and Pay, Spur, Home industries, Kenrich Delta, Wessons, EP Mufflers, Tip Top Butchery, SUZI-Q, Wallace’s Pharmacy for their support.
