A young woman faces drunk driving charges following an incident in New Street, Grahamstown, in the early hours of Saturday 29 March, in which another woman was seriously injured.
Netcare confirmed later on Saturday that night-shift colleagues attended the accident scene. The paramedic, who asked not to be named, said the victim was struck by a car. He said her injuries included a broken leg.
Grahamstown Police Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender told Grocott's Mail that the accident occurred around 1.40am on Saturday. She said officers at the scene reported that the victim's injuries appeared serious.
"She had bleeding from her head and leg," she said.
The victim was taken to hospital.
The officers arrested the 20-year-old driver of the vehicle, a Chevvy Spark.
She too was taken to hospital, for blood alcohol testing.
She has been charged with drunk driving, and reckless and negligent driving, but has been released on bail.
Govender said, "I urge students to be sensible about drinking. If you go out drinking, rather get someone sober to drive you home."
"The driver must have been going at a fair speed," she said, "because the windscreen was shattered."
