Last Saturday 8 March East London’s sports club, Oxford Striders, hosted its 32nd Ladies Nite Race in honour of International Women’s Day.

Among the 2120 participants who entered this year, compared to last year’s 1761, were past and present fellow Grahamstonians. All entrants were exposed to some colourfully-dressed and fully-bearded “women”.  Scroll down to see a host of fun pictures taken at the event!

Every year, organisers of the race allow men to participate, under the condition that they do their very best to dress up as a woman.

Women can choose to run the 10km or run/walk the 5km, while male participants may only enter the 5km race.

Fellow East Londeners Hanlie Botha, Cindy Schwulst and Bici Xoliswa came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

This is the 17th year that Kempston has sponsored the race.

The first 2000 entrants received a T-shirt with the words “Kempston Group 2014 Ladies Nite Race” printed in bold pink on the front, to wear on the day of the race.

Helen Pretorious, an organising member of the race said that only 13 participants pitched up for the very first Ladies Nite Race.

“This year we received the most entries ever,” Pretorious said.
