Rhodes University’s Dean of Students Vivian de Klerk announced her date of retirement on a statement she posted on Facebook on Thursday 6 March.

De Klerk said she had given the University seven months notice to step down from her current position as Dean of Students when she turns 60 on 30 June this year.

“My years at Rhodes have been very rewarding, and I have enjoyed the two very different jobs I have held during the 29 years I have worked here,” de Klerk said in her statement.

She started working for the University in 1985 as a Junior Lecturer and became a Professor and the Head of the English Language and Linguistics Department in 1991.

In 2006, de Klerk decided to take on the position of Dean of Students. “I would like to thank the University for giving me the opportunity to grow and find fulfilment in so many ways,” de Klerk said.

De Klerk looks forward to starting the next chapter of her life and plans to further her writing career. Read her full statement on Facebook.
