Tributes and memorial services for the late well-known academic and media practitioner, Professor Gavin Stewart, are expected to take part in different parts of the country in the coming weeks.

Loved ones, former students and colleagues will take some time to remember and celebrate the life of the giant of South African media. The Daily Dispatch, where Stewart was an editor from 1993 to 2005, will host a memorial service at the East London's Guild Theatre this Friday 28 February from 2pm.

Stewart, who succumbed to stomach cancer on Monday last week, leaves behind his wife, Sue, and four children, two of whom were from a previous marriage, and four grandchildren.

Meanwhile, a memorial service organised by the Stewart family will take place in Hout Bay in Cape town on Saturday, 15 March.

According to a statement released by the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF), the service will start at 4pm from the Silver Mist House, Silver Mist Mountain Lodge and Wine Estate on the Constantia Nek road.

In the statement Stewart's wife, Sue said: "It will be an informal affair where people hopefully will have a chance to share photos, music, jokes, red wine, beer and memories from his so very varied life.

We have so much to celebrate in his life and what he gave to us and South Africa."
