Makana municipality is investigating allegations of a break down in communication between Ward 1 residents and ward councillor Nomhle Ngoqo.

Makana municipality is investigating allegations of a break down in communication between Ward 1 residents and ward councillor Nomhle Ngoqo.

Ward 1 residents have passed a vote of no confidence against both the councillor and her ward committee.

The residents held a community meeting at the area known as Phumlani Park on Tuesday 21 January to discuss, among other things, removing Ngoqo and her entire ward committee.

The residents drafted a letter addressed to Council speaker Rachel Madinda-Isaac informing her of a list of grievances labelled against Ngoqo and her committee.

They accused the councillor of abusing her power as ward councillor and of serving her own interests.

The residents claim that names of people who had appeared on the Extension 10 housing list have disappeared and they had not been given proper explanations as to how that happened.

Residents also claim that they had been asking the councillor to pass their grievances on to the mayor since 2012 without any success.

It is alleged that Ngoqo and her ward committee do not attend meetings or give explanations regarding resident's service delivery complaints.

The residents said the councillor failed dismally in her attempts to serve their interests as a community, instead serving her own.
They called for her to be suspended with immediate effect, without pay.

The residents had given the speaker seven days to respond to their grievances.

An Extension 2 resident who refused to be named said they had met with Madinda-Isaac afterwards, but she had not been able to give them answers because she first had to follow the proper channels.

"She asked us to give our side of the story and said she would give the councillor her chance to do the same," she said.

Municipal spokesperson Yoliswa Ramokolo confirmed that the speaker had received the list of grievances.

She said the incident is still under investigation, adding that once the process is completed the information will be shared with the media.
