After 31 hard-fought matches, Stirling High School from East London won the Brian Baker 1st Girls Water Polo tournament, hosted at Kingswood College.
The three day event was attended by some of the best water polo playing schools from Port Elizabeth, East London, George and Cape Town.
Stirling won the tournament for the second time in three years, after beating an impressive Pearson High team from Port Elizabeth.
Local teams Kingswood and DSG acquitted themselves well. DSG finished in sixth and Kingswood eighth.
“The appeal of this particular tournament is undoubtedly its grueling nature.
"Teams play no less than six full length games (four periods of eight minutes playing time – as per the Olympics) in a full-sized playing area.
"The tournament has grown in popularity since its inception three years ago and the intention is to keep attracting the best water polo teams in the country,” said organiser Pieter Serfontein.
The tournament was named after popular Kingswood teacher, Brian Baker, in recognition of his contribution to the game of water polo at Kingswood.
Baker was instrumental in developing girls’ water polo at the school and coached the sport up until the day he tragically passed away in 2004.
